Diagnostics Q&A

What are diagnostics?

Diagnostics services at Richmond Primary Care Specialists are tests that screen for illnesses, diseases, and other health conditions. You don’t have to make a separate visit for lab work or other testing. The Richmond Primary Care Specialists team uses the latest advances in diagnostic testing to ensure highly accurate results.

Which diagnostic services are available?

Richmond Primary Care Specialists offers the following diagnostics:

Lab testing

Lab tests can detect diabetes, hormone imbalances, high cholesterol, arthritis, and other common chronic diseases.

Pulse volume recording (PVR)

PVR measures blood pressure and blood flow in your arms or legs. It can diagnose peripheral artery disease (PAD), artery blockages, or other vascular abnormalities.

Electrocardiograms (EKGs)

An EKG is a noninvasive heart function test that measures electrical activity in the heart. Your provider may suggest it if you have signs of a heart problem. During the test, your specialist attaches electrodes (electrical wires) to your chest, legs, and arms.

Holter monitor

Holter monitor testing is a diagnostic procedure that detects heart conditions not diagnosed using standard heart function tests. You wear a monitor for 24-48 hours. It records your heart’s activity to detect arrhythmias or other heart conditions.

Nerve conduction studies

A nerve conduction study screens for nerve damage and determines the source of nerve issues. During the study, your provider detects or rules out neuromuscular and muscle diseases. A device displays signal voltages while electrodes attached to your skin deliver impulses.

Rapid strep testing

A rapid strep test screens for strep throat, an infection that causes a sore throat. During the test, your specialist swabs your throat and tests for group A strep. A rapid strep test result typically takes 10-20 minutes.

Spirometry

Spirometry is a lung function test used to diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung diseases. You simply breathe through a tube attached to a special machine while your provider measures your lung’s function.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing

STD testing screens for diseases spread via sexual contact. Examples include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and human papillomavirus (HPV). STD testing consists of blood tests, urine tests, or swabs.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic test that uses painless sound waves to create images of internal parts of the body. Your provider typically applies a gel to the surface of your skin and moves around a transducer. Common ultrasound types include an echocardiogram for the heart and a pregnancy ultrasound.

Which diagnostics will I need?

To determine if you need diagnostic testing, the Richmond Primary Care Specialists team discusses your medical history and symptoms, checks your vital signs, and completes a physical exam. They may recommend multiple tests based on the severity of your symptoms and your risk factors.
